Rita Koszorús

Rita Koszorús

Rita Koszorús (born 1989 in Bratislava) is a Slovak artist of Hungarian origin who has transformed traditional painting into a personal series of abstract narratives exploring identity, time and nostalgia. She studied free graphics and then painting in Daniel Fischer's studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, and completed a study stay in Budapest with Imre Buktová.

Her work is based on the search for the ‘space between’ – ambivalent existence, memories, nostalgia and collective identity. Abstract compositions combine elements of painting, collage and site-specific installations to create layered visual 'islands' that resemble organic landscapes or materials such as concrete, wood and cardboard.

Biography

In her work, Koszorús has launched several significant series and performances, including workshops addressing sharp cracks in identity, and the event 'Monumentus567', for which she collaborated with locals to plant cacti near the Danube, reflecting on themes such as home, migration and adaptation. More intensive thematic explorations of identity came with the Hater Painter89 and Curator Shooting1011 projects, in which visitors or curators shot at her canvases with air guns – a performative act that explores the vulnerability of the image and the role of the artwork.

Collage plays a special role in her artistic approach, representing a system of selection and choice as well as a technique. Her works on paper, canvas, and installations are based on zero-waste principles, layering, and trompe l'œil as an expression of the memory and vision composition process.

She won the prestigious Maľba roka 2021 award for her work schMERZbild FALL. Since then, she has mainly exhibited as part of residencies and exhibitions in Central Europe, for example in Bratislava, Berlin, Paris, Porto and Budapest.

Against this backdrop, she created the book project schMERZbuch, which summarises the collages she created during residencies in Paris, Berlin, Békéscsaba and Selmecbánya.

Rita Koszorús brings a fragmentary, layered approach to the themes of identity, time and collective memory in her paintings and installations. Her work is simultaneously performative, conceptual, visually playful and abstract.
