Michal Škoda

Michal Škoda (1962) is a visual artist, autodidact – he has gradually devoted himself to sculpture, painting, installations and recently mainly to objects, drawing, photography and authored books, which he considers a very important part of his work. The main theme of his work is "man and space". His great interest in architecture is evident not only in his work itself, but also in another activity he is engaged in, which is curating.

Since 1998 he has been the chief curator of the Gallery of Contemporary Art and Architecture – House of Art of the City of České Budějovice, which has become a prestigious institution with a significant international reach.

Biography

In 1996 Michal Škoda travelled to Japan for the first time, staying in Ogumi and Kasama. In 1997 he received the first prize in the Junge Kunst competition (Passau, Germany) and in 2015 he completed an Artist-in-Residence in Krems, Austria. In 2016 he received an Honorable Mention of the Architect of the Year Award and in 2017 he received the Exceptional Achievement Award at the Czech Architecture Prize. In 2018 he completed another important residency at Q21 / MuseumQuartier in Vienna. He considers the mirror object in the "Lenten Intervention" in the Church of the Most Holy Salvator in Prague (2015) to be his most important realization to date. He has had more than sixty solo exhibitions at home and abroad. In recent years, these were mainly exhibitions - There Somewhere Far Away Something Completely - Galerie Kubík - Litomyšl 2019 and 2024 Concept Space / AIS Gallery - in Shibukawa, Japan. Continuous Touches - Central Bohemian Region Gallery - Kutná Hora 2020, In 2022 the exhibition Traces - Alšova jihočeská galerie - Hluboká nad Vltavou and ŠKODA OBJEKTY / SUŠKA KAMENY at the Prague City Gallery in Troja Castle. Last year, 2023, he presented his exhibition Topographies of Solitude at the Telegraph Gallery in Olomouc and this year he presented his largest exhibition to date - Intermingling, prepared, as is most often the case, with curator Silvia Čuzyová for the Fait Gallery in Brno. This was followed by three exhibitions in Japan.
