Jiří Příhoda

Jiří Příhoda

Jiří Příhoda lives between two continents, New Mexico in the U.S.A. and Czech Republic. He devotes his time to the exploration of space, mass, matter, and emptiness through actions, monumental sculptures, drawings, exhibition displays, architecture, video art, and graphic design. From 1990 till 1996, Příhoda studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (AVU) under professors Stanislav Kolíbal and Aleš Veselý. From 2005 till 2015 he returned to AVU as the head of the Monumental Sculpture studio. Last year, he has come back to his educational career, this time at FaVU VUT in Brno.

Since 1992 Příhoda has been actively exhibiting his work both in the Czech Republic and abroad, for example in Beijing, Paris, Baden-Baden and Strasburg. In Czech Republic he had exhibitions at the Troja chateau, Moravian Gallery, and at Hunt Kastner and Václav Špála Gallery. He has participated in two exhibitions at the Rudolfinum gallery in Prague: VOID (2002) and NAVE (2023), which he carried out in collaboration with Brian Eno. In 2019, Příhoda was commissioned for his first monument in Prague’s public space. His Vista Mars is a rotating multimedia sculpture that has become the dominant sight of the new plaza between the administrative complexes at Rustonka.
