Jiří Matějů (*1960) develops a distinctive version of geometric abstraction and is currently one of its strongest representatives. The most prominent contemporary Czech philosopher Miroslav Petříček has described his paintings as "visual metaphors". Matějů himself refers to them as "pictorial metaphors", understanding the term as "some concrete experience that abstracts into something intuitive". The basic building blocks of his paintings are colour and line. The precise division of the surface, combined with the unconventional combination of colours that he mixes himself with different pigments, induces specific optical relationships that give the compositions an unusual impact. The paintings evoke an impression of movement, impermanence and changeability; the two-dimensional images acquire a spatial dimension in which the viewer can enter as an immediate participant. An equally important creative position of Jiří Matějů are pictorial reliefs in the form of creased paper, in which the author examines the structures of asymmetrical symmetry. Matějů’s visual language is characterized by an unusual philosophical depth and is influenced by buddhism, contemporary philosophy and other sciences.
