Jiří Černický has been a prominent figure on the Czech art scene since the 1990s. In his work, he has long operated at the intersection of painting, sculpture, installation, and performance, viewing these individual media not as separate entities but as part of a broader process of reflecting on the image and reality.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (AVU), where he trained in the painting and new media studios. As early as the 1990s, he drew attention to himself with striking performative and intermedia projects that combined personal expression with a broader social context.
His work is based on a shift in meaning, a transformation of context, and the disruption of established interpretive frameworks. He employs the principles of illusion, stylization, and material ambivalence to challenge the stability of visual communication and open up space for multi-layered readings. The aesthetic appeal of his works often contrasts with latent tension or unsettling content, creating situations in which the viewer oscillates between fascination and uncertainty.
Černický has exhibited in a number of significant solo and group exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad. His work has been presented at venues including the Rudolfinum Gallery, the Prague City Gallery, the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, and the Moravian Gallery in Brno.
His work is represented in major public and private collections, including those of the National Gallery in Prague, the Prague City Gallery, and others.
He has received several awards for his work, including the Jindřich Chalupecký Award, one of the most prestigious awards for contemporary artists in the Czech Republic.
In addition to his own artistic practice, he has also been active as a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he led a studio and helped shape the younger generation of artists.
Jiří Černický’s work addresses themes of identity, power, faith, technology, and the fluidity of the contemporary world. He does not treat reality as a given fact, but as a space that can be disrupted, reshaped, and reinterpreted. His works thus do not create fixed meanings, but rather situations in which meaning is constantly shifting.
