Jakub Berdych Karpelis
Jakub Berdych Karpelis (*1971) focuses in his artistic practice primarily on conceptual work using traditional materials such as glass, stone and porcelain. Trained originally in stone sculpture, this background is clearly reflected in his work. His practice is characterised by a deep engagement with material, meticulous craftsmanship and a sense of humour and irony through which he comments on the contemporary world. He is one of the prominent figures of the Czech visual art and design scene and the founder and chief designer of the Qubus brand. Established in 2002, Qubus became the first post-revolution Czech design studio with its own production, founded directly by designers. The Qubus Design Studio also represents his free artistic work and occasionally collaborates with other artists and designers.
He is the author of numerous collections, objects and products, which early in his career were presented at Moss Gallery in New York and Mint Gallery in London. His works are included in several collections, such as the Moravian Gallery in Brno, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum in Munich, among others, as well as in private collections. He has received multiple awards and is the author of the visual design of several prizes across various fields, including the prestigious Czech literary award Magnesia Litera. He also serves as the artistic director of DOX by Qubus, a curated gallery shop, where he occasionally prepares exhibitions positioned between fine art and design.
